On Saturday, the 6-foot-5 forward got his chance.
And he made the most of it.
Scheer, playing with a stress fracture in his foot that will require surgery next week, scored a game-high 17 points to lead Borgia to a 59-41 victory over Kearney in the Missouri Class 4 championship game for the Knights’ fifth state title.
“To finally be on the floor and get one of my own,” Scheer said, “it’s indescribable.”

Scheer, who has scholarship offers from Saint Louis, Wichita State, Missouri State and Lafayette, racked up an impressive stat line in his 31 minutes: 17 points with four 3-pointers, four rebounds, three assists, three steals and one blocked shot.
“There was no way I was going to miss this game,” Scheer said of his injury. “I would have to be on my death bed to miss this one.”
As one of the tallest players on Borgia’s roster, Scheer also faced the challenge of slowing down Kearney’s impressive front line, led by 6-9 junior center Dillon Starzl.
Starzl, who has drawn recruiting attention from Saint Louis as well as Missouri Valley Conference schools, finished with a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds, but he was in foul trouble for much of the night and his team wasn’t able to make a late push to try to get close enough to threaten the Knights’ lead.
